"WE ARE PART OF EACH OTHER" PROJECT
Our fandom is composed of many Tunnels. Unfortunately, not all of them are well-connected. We have online fans who maintain contact with each other via mailing lists and e-mail. We have off-line fans who belong to BatB clubs in their areas of the country. We have fans
in non-English-speaking countries who gather either online or in groups. We have individual fans who may not be online but maintain contact with a few other fans via snail mail. Sometimes we feel that "fandom" consists solely of our little corner of the Tunnels - the ones we visit - and we don't know about or never hear news from other parts of the Tunnels. For instance, are you aware that there are active Tunnels which exist for French- and Italian- and Spanish-speaking fans? Do you know what activities they engage in? Would you like to know? Or how about the individual fan who runs a zine lending library – would you like to know how she organizes it, what her needs are and how she has stayed enthusiastic providing this valuable service to fans for so long? As these two examples illustrate, we need to be in closer touch with each other, so everyone can know what news there is in all parts of our Tunnels, and so we can fully appreciate and celebrate all areas of our Tunnel family. We thus propose putting together a project to contact all our disparate Tunnel dwellers, gather news, and share it in a newsletter-style format which can be posted online, e-mailed or printed. Quarterly newsletters are our goal, but we may begin with semi-annual newsletters as we get started. Ideally, we'd like our first newsletter to come out in conjunction with the next Winterfest Online (January 2007).
What's the first step?
We need to gather contact information for all BatB fan clubs, groups, mailing lists, etc. in the U.S. and abroad, whether they are online or not. By "contact information" we mean snail mail or e-mail for at least one English-speaking person in each group who is willing to be
the contact for this project, to provide news about the group, information about its history, etc., and to receive information to distribute to the group, especially if the group is not online or if information must be translated. This contact list will become the vital channel through which information is gleaned for the newsletter and distributed to all chambers of our Tunnels. See below for how to provide contact information.
After you've got the contacts - then what?
Well, that will be a huge first step! The contact list will be more than half the battle. After we have that, we hope to find volunteers willing to:
1) maintain contact with certain groups,
2) develop the structure and determine the content of the newsletter,
3) write up information to be included in the newsletter, and
4) distribute the newsletter.
Fill out the Volunteer form below if you are
willing to help.
